Café Latte vs Flat White

Café Latte vs Flat White

A wet and grey half term sparked “all hands on deck” days and Mrs Eddie (that’s me) was no exception – I did my two hour stint in the Café yesterday and greeted a customer who asked me for a “flat latte” which unfortunately drew a blank face from me – clearly there is a new latte and I don’t know about it?!  Yes, said the Café Supervisor – everyone is asking about them – flat lattes and flat whites.

So last night I read up on the whole new world of new lattes to find out there is a lot of debate on what one actually is. According to the Coffee Hunter, “A flat white is not just a small latte. They are very different drinks.” – http://www.coffeehunter.org/flat-white-vs-latte/. There is even a Wikipedia listing  for a flat white – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_white which states “It is somewhat similar to the cappuccino or the latte although smaller in volume, therefore having a higher proportion of coffee to milk (closer to a cortado), and milk that is more velvety in consistency – allowing the espresso to dominate the flavour, while being supported by the milk.” Well well, coffee training update clearly required!
