Best Features on Cruise Ships For Kids

More and more families are discovering that cruising can be the perfect family holiday, but which one to choose?  Well, a lot will depend on the ages of your children and what they’re into, but as a general rule of thumb, the newer ships have the best facilities (with Disney being the main exception to this rule), and you’ll find everything from bumper cars to water coasters!

Here’s our pick of the best features on board:

Royal Caribbean’s FlowRider

This incredible surf simulator can be found on several of Royal Caribbean’s newer Quantum Class ships and features a whooshing wave of water just perfect for surfing and body boarding.  Instructors are on hand to help you and it’s completely free of charge (although private lessons are available at extra cost).

Disney Cruise Line’s Aquaduck

Disney Cruise Line’s recently re-imagined Disney Magic boasts a new Aqua Lab water playground featuring all sorts of water jets and bubblers, plus there’s the huge new Aquadunk, a three story slide that twists and turns and even whooshes you 20ft out over the side of the ship in a transparent tube!

Norwegian’s bowling lanes

If you’re a sporty family, look no further than Norwegian Epic.  With its brand new sports complex taking up two decks and including a full sized basketball court, a 24ft climbing cage and a rock climbing wall, the Epic is the one to beat.  There’s even two full sized 6-lane bowling alleys (small extra fee).

Royal Caribbean’s bumper cars

Another feature of Royal Caribbean’s impressive Quantum Class ships is the SeaPlex – a multi-tasking indoor entertainment area that morphs into everything from a dance floor with a floating DJ, a roller skating rink, circus school, basketball court and, most importantly, a full size bumper car circuit.

Don’t discount other ships in the fleet either – they may not have the dodgems, but still offer great activities like rock climbing, mini golf, ice skating, and all have brilliant kids clubs.

Cartoon Capers

Most of the major cruise lines have teamed up with cartoon characters.  You’ll find characters from Nickelodeon on board Norwegian’s fleet, including SpongeBob SquarePants.

The whimsical world of Dr Seuss can be found on Carnival Cruise Line’s ships: kids can join characters like the Cat in the Hat and Thing One and Thing Two for parades, crafts activities and even a special ‘green eggs and ham’ breakfast.

Royal Caribbean have Dreamworks, so you can meet Shrek and Po from Kung Fu Panda (great parade on these ships), and obviously you’ll find all your favourite Disney characters on board Disney Cruise Line’s fleet of three ships, including special meet and greet sessions with characters.
